Blood sugar balance and insulin are so important to our overall health and not many people know that.
Ok Dr. Doneisha, so how do I fix this problem.
Here are 3 tips to achieve blood sugar balance
Reduce sugar and refined foods
Sugar is addictive. We've all had the experience of having 1 cookie, then 2 and then 3 turns into 10 without you even realizing. And then we blame ourselves for not having self control. But these foods are made in such a way to make them extra sweet and keep us coming back for more. These sugars include white granulated sugar, brown sugar, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup. Even honey and maple syrup can dysregulate your blood sugar. Refined foods include white rice, white bread and pastries.
Enjoy more whole foods
The key to regulating your blood sugar is to eat whole foods meaning foods in their whole form and foods in their natural state as best as possible. These include fruits and vegetables as sources of fiber, whole grains, healthy protein and healthy fats. When you have protein and fats with your meals it helps to stabilize your blood sugar levels.
Exercise
Exercises such as strength training, high intensity interval training and cardio exercises help with balancing our blood sugar levels by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin. This means that when insulin binds to the cells they are more responsive to let glucose inside the cell (If you need more help understanding this take my Blood Sugar Simplified Workshop).
Now that you have these 3 tips I challenge you to implement them. By taking one small step you can start to make changes and feel confident that you are achieving blood sugar balance.
